In 1841, the island of Hong Kong was ceded to the British. Contrary to local belief, no one saw this as any sort of major victory, in fact the British refereed to their new concession as a “Barren Rock”. And indeed it was. The true value of Hong Kong was to be seen later as one of the best deep water ports in the world.

Hong Kong’s development over the years has seen a “Barren Rock” become a booming metropolis of some 7 million people. The city is a world famous trading port and boasts the world's third largest film industry, after Hollywood and Bollywood. Stars and directors of Hong Kong movies include Bruce Lee, John Woo, Chow Yun Fat, Shu Qi and Jackie Chan.

From a barren island, to a place where you can find solid gold toilets, it certainly is a conundrum. If you are the type of person who likes to see the world from a different perspective and find those odd connections that put it all together, Hong Kong is the place for you.

Possibly the quintessential past-time of foriegners in Hong Kong, racing is still a big draw and regular meeting place for the long-timers.

What else is there to do in Hong Kong? Check out our Listings pages.
